I'm trying to access an ebook, but the website says I have to request it, what's going on?

Answer

While the library owns hundreds of thousands of ebooks, we don't own them all. We use a service called Demand Driven Acquisition to quickly borrow ebooks that we don't own. This is basically a library for our library, we borrow the book for you and only you have access to it.

If you come across a book that you need to request, the page will look like this.

Click on Request. You will be prompted to create or sign into your ProQuest Account. This account allows us to track the request. Unfortunately, we cannot make the account for you. But, having an account will unlock other features as well, like saving books to your bookshelf.

You can request the loan for 1, 7, or 14 days. Once you click Request Book, we get a notification and we approve your request. We approve requests on a rolling basis Monday through Friday as soon as we can. If you know that other students will need to use the same text or feel like the title would be a great addition to our collection, you can request that we purchase the book in the notes section of the request.

You will get an email when your request has been approved. Please click the link in the email to access the book

If you have any questions about this process please contact us at libref@beloit.edu or send us a message through the Ask A Librarian page of the Library's website.
