How do I use Boolean Operators?

Answer

Boolean Operators are the words: AND, OR, and NOT. You insert them between your keywords to help refine your search.

AND narrows your search. Including AND tells the database that your search results must include both of the keywords. For example: Education AND online will return results that discuss both terms.

OR expands your search. Linking your keywords with OR tells the database that you will accept both of these words. For example: virtual OR online. Use when your keywords have synonyms.

NOT narrows your search. When you use NOT, you're telling the database that the concept is not within your scope. Use this sparingly, sometimes you can exclude results that mention the unrelated concept, but are predominantly about your core research. For example: education NOT online, would remove any results that include the word "online."
